What is Spiritualism?

Spiritualism combines Religion, Philosophy & Science and is based on a belief in the continuous existence of the Soul and the ability to communicate with those Souls who have departed from the physical realm. Modern Spiritualism started with the Fox Sisters in 1848. Many small groups gathered together in America and then across Europe and England. Spiritualism spread to Australia along with the Victorian gold-rush in the 1860’s.

Today, across the World, countless Churches, Centres and Groups have been established to perpetuate the study and development of Spiritualism. From simple rappings, the Spiritualist movement now recognizes the communication that comes from the Spirit world through Mediumship. This communication is strongly based on the Medium being able to provide verifiable proof of the continuous existence of the Soul.

“Spiritualism” It’s a Religion that combines Philosophy & Science, and is based on the Seven Principles of Spiritualism. It recognises them as a guide by which to live their life. Spiritualists do not have any dogmas or creeds, but are guided by a set of aims. It believes in a continuous life, based upon the demonstrated fact of communication, by means of Mediumship, with those who live in the Spirit World. “Spiritualism Is a Religion” because it strives to understand and to comply with the Physical, Mental and Spiritual Laws of Nature, which are the laws of God.

“Spiritualism Is a Philosophy” because it studies the Laws of Nature both on the seen and unseen sides of life and bases its conclusions upon present observed facts. It accepts statements of observed facts of past ages and conclusions drawn there from, when sustained by reason and by results of observed facts of the present day. “Spiritualism Is a Science” Because it investigates, analyses and classifies facts and manifestations demonstrated from the Spirit side of life. A Spiritualist is one who believes, as the basis of his or her Religion, in the communication between this and the Spirit World by means of Mediumship and who endeavours to mould his or her character and conduct in accordance with the highest teachings derived from such communication.

A Medium is one whose organism is sensitive to vibrations from the Spirit world and through whose instrumentality, intelligences in that world can convey messages and produce the phenomena of Spiritualism. The Phenomena of Spiritualism consists of Prophecy, Clairvoyance, Clairaudience, Spiritual Healing, Visions, Trance, Apport, Levitation, Raps, Automatic and Independent Writings and Paintings, Voice, Materialization, Photography, Psychometry and any other manifestation proving the continuity of life as demonstrated through the Physical and Spiritual senses and faculties of man.

The aim of Spiritualism is to effect a complete at-one-ment and unison of man with God, till every action and thought of man is in perfect harmony with the Divine Will. It is where our will and God’s will are one and the same.

It lays down no creed or dogmas. It cheerfully lives out its religion in all times and places, acts, words and thoughts.

It does not make the means the end. It prizes the sign only for the sake of signification. Its temple is all space; its shrine, the good heart; its ritual, works of good and use.

Its profession of Faith is a Divine life; good works without; Spiritual beauty and purity within; and deeds of love to God through His creatures. It does good for goodness’ sake.

It asks no pardon for its learning’s, it only seeks the opportunity to atone for them. It bows to no idols, whether made of wood or of metal; of flesh or of parchment.

It is reverent to truth only, and rejects all falsehood, though upheld by antiquity or power of the Church.

It counts no good word profane because a heathen spoke it, nor a lie sacred though uttered by those the world calls scared.

Its watchword is “BE YE PERFECT AS GOD IS PERFECT”.

It makes each man his own redeemer and gladly accepts every true word; every earnest exhortation to good or wise counsel spoken by others.

It calls God, Father not King; Jesus, Brother, not Redeemer; the Heavens the Summerland, not a golden Heaven.

Its sum of prayer is “THY WILL BE DONE”; its Church that of Nature and all Holy Souls wherever gathered together.
